Good parents are always on the lookout to make their homes safe for their children.  We install safety latches on cabinets, secure dangerous cleaners, medicines and chemicals to prevent accidental poisoning and protect children from outlets by covering unused receptacles to prevent shocks.  One of the most overlooked dangers in the home are windows. Fourteen kids a day, according to a study published Monday in the journal Pediatrics are treated in emergency rooms for window falls.

On Sunday night in Lacey another preventable tragedy occurred,  4-year-old girl died after falling from a second-floor window.  If you have small children in your home, be sure to secure the windows. Every summer we here of these easily preventable tragedies. New research finds that nearly 5,200 kids are treated in an emergency department each year after falling from a window.

All windows should only open 4″ to prevent falls but must have window stops that can be easily opened by adults in case of a fire.

Alway limit access to windows but removing beds, dressers or other furniture that kids may climb on to access the window.
