As a licensed Home Inspector, we have to take continuing education to maintain our license. Just a couple weeks ago, we were in a class with a representative from Simpson, the company that makes all kind of metal connectors used in construction.  The topic of the day was deck attachments, in particular we learned about a couple of brackets that secure the deck framing to the home with “1,500 lbs. lateral load connection at two locations per deck”.  This is to meet the newest codes on decks and securing them to the structure

Fast forward to this weekends inspection, an old client from 5 years back called me to check out a very questionable deck he just spent thousands of dollars on, and about to be inspected by  the city of Seattle.  Guess what they forgot?  Lots of things, actually we had a LONG list of mistakes.  To me the most glaring was the lack of proper attachments to the house, exactly what we just learned a few days before.

In case you want to get nerdy also, here is the entire catalog for Simpson Wood Construction . You can read all about this connector and the new code requiring it on page 209.

I guess extra education is never a bad thing.
