I have always warned people about excessive lint in the dryer vent.   On today’s inspection we found this burnt hole where the dryer venting caught on fire.  Be sure you have these maintained.

“The U.S. Fire Administration (part of FEMA) cites that there are 2900 home clothes dryer fires every year resulting in an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss”

How do you know if you need to clean out the vent?  that can be hard to tell, but here are some tips.

Does a load of clothes take longer then usual to dry?

Are the clothes and the dryer very hot?

Any hot unusual hot smells like burning or melting plastic.?

Does the vent flapper or louvers open only a little bit when the dryer is running?

Have you had the vent cleaned and checked out?

These all could indicate you need to have the vent system serviced and cleaned.  Remember a disconnected vent is nearly as bad as a plugged one!
